I get so annoyed when people try to tell me what socialism or communism is. The kind of people doing it typically have no idea what they are talking about, either. Why not ask your resident communist instead?
So I’m here to educate! Yay!
One of the dead white guys (Karl Marx prob) said that society must have a surplus of wealth in order for Socialism to even be possible.
Wealth
The entire basis of socialism is that there’s enough resources to go around to meet everyone’s physical needs. Through robotic automation, we should be working less and less because our jobs are easier. But instead, Capitalism has unemployment and recessions and tries to figure out how to extract the most profit out of each worker.
Such as, the millions of vacant homes just sit empty accruing / depleting equity and investments for the sake of money. The market economics of homelessness is complete chaos. Also, a redistribution of wealth will raise the standard of living for all people.

Democratic Economy
The greatest appeal to socialism that I’ve ever heard, is the democratic economy. Workers will have a say over their own job. A horizontal / bottom-up system of decision-making would empower everyone where they work. If workers are empowered then they will give a shit about their work. The converse under capitalism, is Marx’s theory of alienation.
A democratic workplace would sort of look like labor unionionism. Except unions as they exist now are only a poor excuse of “the best we can do under capitalism.” They only serve as a reactive force instead of proactive force for doing good things. **Especially if you live in a Right to Work state like me.
Instead of elected presidents and leaders, any manager would get the same payment as the rest of the employees. Employees would instead choose a “delegate” only when necessary, to go to a larger regional or national body in order to represent the desires of their constituents. Also, any good socialist economy would always employ IMMEDIATE RECALL ABILITY if those delegates don’t act appropriately.
Instead of a teacher getting fired, how about their colleagues, and even students get to decide and give input on that employees merits and faults?
Instead of teachers being forced to follow state curriculum standards dictated by the Education Agency and school board officials, who have conflict of interests with textbook company collusion, teachers could develop a subject curriculum from the bottom up and decide what is actually worth teaching in the classroom.
Students would have rights too. There could be a REAL student union body where they would have ability to hold their teachers accountable, and file a grievance if the teacher is not doing the right thing.
When people say Schools/Fire Departments/Police/Public Streets are socialist, they are talking about very meager public works paid for by capitalist taxes. These are at their very best, a capitalist social democracy. AKA, high taxes and high social services. But what’s missing?
Decision-making power. In public schools, teachers and students have almost zero decision-making power as it stands now. Schools could be a positive, exciting environment of learning if teachers and students had more decision-making power. This might move schools away from the toxic place of coercion and obedience that exists now.
People have built alternative instutions while operating in our capitalist society (an anarchist or socialist idea). The Free School Movement tries to match our ideals to a real brick and mortar school. These schools provide a glimpse into the future of what socialists want to employ across the (world).
But wtf is communism?
Socialism is a tactical strategy designed for taking away power from the capitalists in a transitional moment.
Socialism is not the goal. The goal is “from each according to their ability, to each according to their means”. Free association, trust, and accountability. A.K.A. communism.
“Withering away of the state” is a Marxist concept coined by Friedrich Engels referring to the idea that, with realization of the ideals of socialism, the social institution of a state will eventually become obsolete and disappear, as the society will be able to govern itself without the state and its coercive enforcement of the law. The Bolsheviks fought for socialism. Stalin stole power and instituted a command War economy and a 5 year plan. Once Stalin was leading, there was pretty much no socialism even left in the country and instead became a degenerated worker’s state/state capitalist economy.
Communism is the goal. It’s worth fighting for because it aims to alleviate the suffering of all people by providing for their needs and their wants. The arts and development will FLOURISH because of a planned, democratic economy.
Workers within the energy industry would be able to decide “No we don’t want to mine a single more piece of coal out of the ground. Yes we want 100% renewable resources which is already technically possible.” Citizens would also have power to give input because they’re the clients of such a program.
Communism is about the empowerment of all people.
Communism will win… or capitalism will destroy the earth into Barbarism.
